The Musical Theatre programme is an intensive 1 year postgraduate programme which offers practical training that will equip participants in the ‘triple-threat’ disciplines of acting, singing, dancing. All of our teaching staff are theatre professionals that work in higher education as well as the industry.

UWTSD Cardiff offers a selection of postgraduate degrees that will provide the Students with a solid technique hand in hand with a broad understanding of the creative industries in Wales and beyond.

UWTSD Cardiff is a lively melting pot of the actors, singers and dancers of the future. The courses’ work ethic is based on personal development, respect and collaboration. This stems from the support the students receive from the committed and professional staff.

The Musical Theatre programme is an intensive 1-year postgraduate programme which offers practical training that will equip participants in the ‘triple-threat’ disciplines of acting, singing, dancing. All of our teaching staff are theatre professionals that work in higher education as well as the industry.

Course Overview

This course will develop the student’s skills as a musical theatre performer with an emphasis on:

1. Public Performances

Students are provided with the experience that corresponds to working on a number of professional staged performances. They will rehearse and perform a number of roles under professional direction and production conditions. Students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of ability to work independently, with a director, and in collaboration with their peers.

2. Core skills and Techniques

Dance: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, musical theatre repertoire, body conditioning, Pilates, yoga & physical theatre Singing: Weekly One-to-one singing lessons, vocal technique classes, repertoire classes and ensemble singing classes. Acting: Classes in Stanislavski, Meisner, Michael Checkov, acting through song, one-to-one monologue tutorials, text analysis.

3. Professional Development

Professional development will include an agent’s showcase and the preparation of a professional development portfolio. The portfolio will include evidence of research, reflective writing and a collection of materials compiled over the duration of the student’s studies, including a list of the activities and events that they have been involved in and a range of professional documents. It is developed in close consultation with a Personal Tutor and tailored to the specific professional requirements of each student. As a whole, the contents of the portfolio will be evidence of the student’s individual artistic profile and reflect on their ongoing development as a performer.
